Braden Smith carries Purdue in European opener
Behind Braden Smith‘s 19 points, 12 assists and masterful control of the game, Purdue won its exhibition opener in Germany Wednesday, beating Kickz IBAN 88-71.
In a game closely contested for three quarters and highlighted by confusion among the officials and scorekeepers, the Boilermakers led just 62-60 (we think) after three, but Smith returned to the floor after an extended rest and took command, as he had earlier during a Purdue first-half run. Smith’s cross-court assist to Myles Colvin for a three was the moment the Boilermakers began to blow the game open.

Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 16 points, while Brian Waddell was one of the game’s real eye-openers, scoring 15 on 6-of-7 shooting, 3-of-4 from three. Fletcher Loyer scored eight points, as did Colvin, all the freshman’s points coming in that fourth quarter runaway.
Purdue was 10-of-22 from three-point range.
Mason Gillis left the game in the second half with an ankle injury; Ethan Morton didn’t play due to his on-going hamstring issue.
