A FEW THINGS ABOUT PURDUE

• With a win, Purdue will finish 8-3 in regular season non-conference game, all three losses against ranked teams away from Mackey Arena.

• Purdue will be without backup center Will Berg due to a foot injury.

• The Boilermakers approach the New Year ranked ninth nationally in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom, but also having struggled against certain types of opponents, high-pressure, highly physical and older defensive teams built to force turnovers. Purdue’s turnover percentage of 18.3 percent lies well north of 200 nationally.

In Purdue’s four losses, opponents have averaged 23.8 points off turnovers.

• The Boilermakers 39.6 percent from three-point range.

• This is not a significant statistic in the context of Purdue performance but is relevant to outcomes: Opponents have shot 75.7 percent from the foul line, making 12 free throws per game on average.

ABOUT THIS GAME

• After winning five straight earlier this season, Toledohas lost four of its last five, the lone win coming over Defiance. The Rockets lost by 35 to UC-San Diego, 33 to Oakland and 29 to Houston.

• Toledo’s defensive metrics are some of the worst in America. Youngstown State put up 93 points. Opponents are shooting 55.4 percent effectively and better than 57 percent on two-point shots. Its rebounding, shot-blocking and turnover-generation numbers are all substandard.

• Sophomore guard Sonny Wilson averages 15 points and is 9-of-23 from three this season.

The New Year affords Purdue a chance to show improvement in this pivotal area.Toledo does not profile as a problematic matchup, but the turnover issue remains the most obvious hot button moving forward.Purdue doesn’t have tremendous size right now. Even if it did it would still need to keep conditioning itself to outrebound and out-physical Big Ten competition.

GOLDANDBLACK.COM PREDICTION: PURDUE 95, TOLEDO 68

This should be a pretty drama-free non-conference finale for Purdue prior to a Big Ten schedule that sets the Boilermakers up for some early success.
