Purdue DB Bryce Hampton's appeal for seventh season denied
Purdue’s already thin secondary took another blow when defensive back Bryce Hampton announced on social media today that his appeal for a seventh season was denied.
Hampton played just one season with Purdue. He primarily was a nickelback in 2022, making 42 tackles, two tackles for loss with three PBU’s for the Big Ten West champs.
The season Hampton was trying to recoup was 2017, when he was at Mesa Junior College in Arizona. That season, Hampton says he played in just four games, which should be enough to preserve a season of eligibility. But the fact he played for a fourth time past the midway point of the 2017 season, his appeal was denied.
“I played in the first three games, sat out the next six games,” Hampton told GoldandBlack.com. “Then, I played in the second-to-last game for three plays and recorded a catch. I didn’t play in the bowl game. And that counted as a season.”
Hampton’s hardship appeal was denied by the National Junior College Athletic Association. He plans to take part in Purdue’s Pro Day on March 9.

“All I can ask for is an opportunity,” said Hampton, who played at Division II Adams State–located in Colorado–in 2021. Prior to that, Hampton played at Snow J.C. in Utah in addition to Mesa. Hampton’s path to Purdue was unique.
“Yeah, it was quite a journey,” said Hampton. “It’s been fun. I’ve inspired a lot of people.”

Hampton projected as a likely backup in 2023, with Purdue welcoming back Cam Allen and Sanoussi Kane as its top safeties. The Boilermakers also have brought in Arkansas transfer safety Anthony Brown, who is on campus and could forge a starting spot. Purdue’s other safeties are largely unproven.
The cornerback slot is even thinner. Jamari Brown is a returning starter, and Purdue will welcome Stanford transfer Salim Turner-Muhammad, who will arrive in the spring. Tee Denson remains on the roster, but he has yet to play a down for Purdue after transferring from Kansas State prior to the 2022 season as he has been slow to recover from double sports hernia surgery. Denson may have to take a medical redshirt. Beyond those three, the cornerback spot is bereft of proven commodities.
Purdue starts spring football on March 21.
