PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

So now that the first portion of Purdue’s 2023 signing class is inked, there remain a few balls in the air, notably the outstanding commitments still from George Burhenn and Kendrick Gilbert. More on them later.

Obviously now the portal comes to the forefront, and Purdue head coach Ryan Walters and coordinator Graham Harrell are out looking at quarterback.

As you know, Purdue is involved with Texas’ Hudson Card, though he did not make a visit this past weekend as was hoped.

Purdue is also very involved with Pitt’s Kedon Slovis, who played at USC for three years when Harrell was on staff in L.A.

“Always wanted to come back and play for Graham as long as the situation was a good one,” Slovis told Tom in a quick text exchange.

There’s obviously an in there with Slovis, but also a modest connection with Card, being that he’s from Austin and Drew Brees has a waiver from the NCAA to recruit on Purdue’s behalf. So Austin native can be involved in recruiting Austin native. Is that the most substantive deal considering that Brees’ coaching run at Purdue ends when the Citrus Bowl does, but it can’t hurt, either.

That said, Card would figure to be a tough get, and Slovis should have good options, too.

Purdue will recruit pretty much every position out of the portal, a process that begins even without a staff fully in place. January should be eventful.

We expect Burhenn to sign tomorrow, presumably with Purdue. He did just visit Louisville, but he made it sound to us like he was sticking with the Boilermakers.

Gilbert will wait until February, though he does have some natural predispositions toward Purdue in that he has some Cathedral buddies on Purdue’s roster now, his dad actually works in Lafayette and proximity to home. Not sure he’d be inclined to follow Purdue’s old staff to Louisville and we’re not sure Jeff Brohm would prioritize him as a flip target anyway. (TD/staff)

PURDUE FOOTBALL

As we reported today, Cory Patterson is headed to Purdue to join the offensive staff, making the move from Illinois. That could be running backs or could be receivers (plus potential additional titles) but could also open up some doors recruiting in Downstate Illinois and St. Louis, where Patterson was coach at Trinity High School before parlaying his success — and recruiting connections — into a spot on Lovie Smith’s Illinois staff. Bret Bielema kept him on.

St. Louis and specifically East St. Louis turn out a lot of players every year and Patterson has been valuable to the Illini in landing his share. We’d expect Purdue to now be in that mix every year for those guys. (staff)

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Not much going on with the holiday right now, but Raleigh Burgess‘ visit on Jan. 29 would be the next big visit, we think.

Matt Painter has now twice traveled to Kentucky to see point guard Travis Perry and once to see Gicarri Harris.

We keep hearing positive things about Purdue’s standing with Perry at this point, but it would be especially telling if he comes back during the season for an unofficial visit after officially visiting in the fall. He may be from Kentucky, but he is not exactly close, so it would require an effort for him to get up here during the season. (BN)
