Purdue headed to Citrus Bowl in Orlando to play No. 17 LSU

Pack your bags for Florida. Purdue is headed to the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando to play No. 17 LSU.

The official announcement came on Sunday. The Boilermakers will battle LSU (9-4; 6-3) on January 2 in Camping World Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET on ABC.

Purdue (8-5; 6-4) never has faced the Tigers, who won the SEC West and lost 50-30 to No. 1 Georgia in the league title game on Saturday. This will be the second season in a row the Boilermakers will have played an SEC team, beating Tennessee 48-45 in OT in the Music City Bowl last season. It also will be the third bowl in succession Purdue will have played an SEC squad, losing to Auburn 63-14 in the Music City Bowl.

This will be the fourth bowl trip in six seasons for Purdue under Jeff Brohm. And it will be the second in a row.

LSU is led by a familiar coach: Brian Kelly. He coached Notre Dame for 12 years (2010-21) before taking over the Tigers prior to the 2022 season. In his time leading the Fighting Irish, Kelly forged a 6-0 mark vs. the Boilermakers, including a 27-13 decision in South Bend in 2021 vs. Brohm.

This will be Purdue’s first bowl trip to Florida since the Boilermakers lost 24-7 to Maryland in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando after the 2006 season. Purdue played in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando after the 2003 season, losing 34-27 in OT to Georgia. The Boilers only other bowl in Florida came after the 1999 season, when they lost 28-25 in OT to Georgia. All three bowls in the Sunshine State came with Joe Tiller as head coach.

Under Brohm, Purdue has played SEC teams five times and forged a 3-2 mark. Brohm is 1-1 vs. Missouri; 1-0 vs. Vanderbilt; 1-0 vs. Tennessee and 0-1 vs. Auburn.

With a win, Purdue will finish with nine victories in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1997-98.
