SOCCER DEFEATS VALPO, FALLS TO WAKE

In a match that featured several good opportunities for both teams, the soccer team lost to Wake Forest, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Folk Field in West Lafayette, Indiana.

On a warm and sun-soaked day, the Boilermakers (2-2-0) saw their two-game win streak snapped, while the Deamon Deacons (3-0-1) remained unbeaten in their last 20 non-conference games. Wake Forest found their goals in the 44th and 79th minutes, and while Purdue had good chances in the final third throughout the game, the Old Gold and Black could not get a goal.

In the first-ever matchup between the two programs, Purdue out-shot Wake Forest 12-10, though the visitors had the edge in shots on target, 7-4. The home team earned all five corner kicks in the contest. The Boilermakers were called for 12 fouls and the Deamon Deacons committed 14. Six yellow cards were issued, three to each side.

Freshman forward Lauren Omholt had a game-high four shots, one on goal. Senior midfielder Emily Mathews and sophomore forward Brooke Haarala, off the bench, each had three shots, one on target. Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Cyr had a season-high-tying five saves.

A pair of first career goals within the first 14 minutes powered the soccer team to a 4-1 win over Valparaiso on Thursday night at Folk Field in West Lafayette, Indiana.

On a hot and muggy evening, the Boilermakers (2-1-0) took an early lead in the fifth minute for the second consecutive game and led 2-0 after 14 minutes. The goals, by freshman forward Lauren Omholt and freshman defender Zoe Cuneio, were the first of their careers. A pair of veterans, senior midfielder Emily Mathews and junior forward Gracie Dunaway, scored in the second half to secure Purdue’s second consecutive win.

The four-goal performance came after an 8-0 win on Sunday. Eight of the 12 goals in Purdue’s last two games were scored by different Boilermakers, and four of the goals in the two-game win streak have been first career goals.

As the Beacons (2-1-0) suffer their first loss of the year, they allowed more than three goals for the first time since October, 2021. The Boilermakers also improve to 5-0-0 all-time in the in-state series, which was contested for the first time since 2009.

Purdue held a 19-5 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal in the game. The home side had six corner kicks to the visitors’ three, and the Boilermakers had 10 fouls to Valpo’s four.

CHARLTON FOURTH AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two Purdue track & field alums competed at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and Devynne Charlton earned a berth in the final of the 100-meter hurdles.

Charlton placed fourth overall in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.52 seconds in the final. It was her best-ever finish at the outdoor world championships after coming in seventh a year ago. Charlton finished 0.09 seconds behind the winner and 0.06 away from a top-finished 0.09inish.

At the National Athletics Centre, Charlton opened the week with a national-record time of 12.44 in the heats, the second-fastest prelim time among 43 finishers. Charlton was third in the semifinals in 12.49, as she earned one of four automatic-qualifying spots to the final.

Last year at the World Championships, Charlton was seventh in the 100m hurdles in 12.53

Additionally, Boilermaker alumnus Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finished 13th overall in the shot put. He earned a mark of 20.68 meters and just missed out on a top-12 finish and a spot in the final. Thirty-seven competitors were in the field.

This week’s performances in Budapest comes after current Purdue sophomore Seth Allen won gold in the discus throw at the 2023 Pan American U20 Championships on August 5, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Allen also won the U.S. U20 national title in the discus this summer and incoming Boilermaker Britannia Johnson won the Jamaican U20 championship in the shot put. Additionally in Jamaica, Johnson also was second in the discus, and her sister, Britannie Johnson, was the runner-up in the shot put and third in the discus.
