WBB Runs By Racers

Purdue scored 20 or more points in all four quarters Sunday afternoon to roll to a 90-61 win over Murray State at Mackey Arena. Purdue moved 2-0 for the second straight year under head coach Katie Gearlds.

Purdue shot a blistering 50.7% from the field and went 9-for-21 (42.9%) from behind the arc. Purdue is now 15-3 under Gearlds when shooting 40% or better and recorded its 21st game with seven or more 3-pointers in 34 games (14-7).

Transfer duo Lasha Petree and Caitlyn Harper combined for 40 points. Petree paced all scorers with 23 points with three triples, while Harper added 17 for the second straight game. Junior Madison Layden knocked down a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 15 points.

After making history as the first Boilermaker to notch a non-point double-double in the season opener against Marshall, Jeanae Terry did it again Sunday. The senior tallied 10 rebounds and 10 assists falling one point shy of her third career triple-double.

The Boilermakers made the extra pass with 25 assists on 35 made field goals. Layden added six of her own, and Harper, Cassidy HardinJayla Smith and freshman Addison Potts chipped in two. The 25 helpers were the most in the Katie Gearlds era.

While the Boilermakers moved the ball, they did so without committing turnovers. Purdue committed just seven giveaways in the win. Defensively, the Boilermakers scored 17 points on 12 Murray State (1-1) turnovers.

Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, Katelyn Young came in after scoring 23 points in the Murray State’s senior opener and following 20.1 points per game last year. Purdue held her to just seven points.

The Boilermakers jumped out to a 20-13 lead after the first quarter, aided by an 11-2 run late in the period. Purdue scored 18 of the first 21 points in the second and carried a 13-point advantage into the break.

Purdue continued to build on the lead behind a 51.3% shooting clip in the second half, growing it to as many as 32 in the second half. The Boilermakers hit on 6-of-10 triples, as Layden and Petree evenly split four.

MORE HISTORY
Terry became the first player in Purdue history to achieve a non-point double-double twice in a season and a career. She is just the fifth player in the nation since 2009 to achieve that mark multiple times in a season. Terry was just one point shy of her third career triple-double. No other Boilermaker has more than one.

TRANSFER TROUBLEMAKERS
Lasha Petree dropped a 20-piece for the 30th time in her career. She was 9-of-15 from the field and hauled down four rebounds. Harper has scored 17 points in both games this season. The Heartland, Wisc., native was 8-of-14 shooting with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks, as well as a plus-minus of 40. The duo is averaging 35 points over the first two games of the season.

#15 Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to #16 Penn State

In tight match that saw 28 tied scores over the four sets, No. 15 volleyball fell to No. 16 Penn State, 1-3 (25-21, 25-27, 19-25).

The Boilermakers came out with a .333 hitting % in the first set and came within distance of taking a 2-1 advantage after earning three set points, but Penn State’s 8-3 run to end the game.

Redshirt junior Megan Renner registered a double-double, her third of the season, with a Big Ten season-high-tying 42 assists alongside 10 digs.

Libero Maddie Schermerhorn totaled 25 digs in the match, including 21 through the first three sets.

Three Boilermakers reached double-digit kills in the match, led by Eva Hudson with 13 kills. Meanwhile, Raven Colvin and Emma Ellis each added 10 apiece. Colvin brought momentum throughout the night with a team-leading six block assists in the match and averaged a .388 attack % between the first and third sets.

One home match remains for the Boilermakers. The Boilermakers will be back in Holloway Gymnasium next Friday night at 7 p.m. ET vs. Michigan for Senior Night.

Wrestling Slips in Home Opener

Wrestling won four of its matches on Sunday, but lost in its first dual of the season to visiting Rider 23-13.

The Boilermakers (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) won the opening bout of the afternoon before surrendering the next three to dig themselves into a 10-3 hole. Wins in three of the next four tied things up between the two sides with just two matches to go. The Broncs won the decisive weights at the end however and took the dual. Four Purdue wrestlers made their dual debuts for head coach Tony Ersland‘s side in the loss.

Sophomore #8 Matt Ramos (6-0) put Purdue in the lead early with a 12-5 decision over Tyler Klinsky. The Lockport, Ill., native continued his strong start to the year by racking up five takedowns, three of which came in the first period. Ramos has scored first in all six of his matches so far this season and is outscoring opponents 29-4 in the first period in those bouts.

Redshirt-senior 157-pounder Kendall Coleman (5-0) ended a three-match skid for Purdue by claiming a 9-3 decision win against Jake Silverstein. Coleman controlled the bout throughout, but came up just short in the race for bonus points. His three takedowns in the match move him into 17th on the all-time Purdue takedowns list with 238, passing former teammate Max Lyon.

The 174-pound weight class saw an impressive fight from junior Macartney Parkinson, who used a nice throw inside of the first 20 seconds of the first period to get a takedown before riding tough the rest of the period. He asserted control throughout the match to come away with a 6-2 decision over Michael Wilson.

Sophomore Ben Vanadia, in his first dual appearance, earned the final win and the only bonus points for Purdue on the day with a 12-2 major decision against Asa Terrell. He started the match by turning a single-leg hold by Terrell into a takedown of his own and finished off the major with an empathic single-leg of his own that nearly turned into a fall.

Purdue will have a chance to bounce back next weekend with the team hosting the Boilermaker Duals including Cleveland State, Chattanooga and Northern Illinois on Sunday starting at 9:00 a.m. ET.

Women’s Tennis Closes Out Fall Events

As the final day of the Bonita Bay Collegiate Open comes to a close, so does the fall season for the women’s tennis team after facing Notre Dame.

The Boilermakers saw another tie break in singles when sophomore Tara Katarina Milic forced the match to a third set after coming back to win the second. Milic won 4-6, 7-6 (1), 10-4 to add another win to the team tally.

Sophomore Juana Larranaga and freshman Kennedy Gibbs also had successful days on the singles court with wins of their own.

Gibbs also had a solid day at doubles when teaming up with junior Rut Galindo. The pair fought through a hard match to secure a 7-5 win over their opponent.
