Boilers Retain Monon Spike for 15th Straight Year

A light’s-out final three sets by the No. 12 Purdue Boilermakers propelled the squad to a 3-1 victory versus Indiana (18-25, 25-15, 25-10, 25-13) to keep the Monon Spike in West Lafayette. With the win, Purdue has retained the rivalry trophy for 15 consecutive years.

With the result, Purdue moves to 16-6, 7-5 in conference action while snapping Indiana’s four-match win streak (13-11, 6-6 Big Ten).

In one of Purdue’s strongest performances of the season, the team out-blocked Indiana 17.5-4 and led in efficiency .347 attack % vs. .057%. Purdue’s 17.5 blocks were a season-high, while the offensive effort marked the most efficient Boilermaker offense in eight matches (last: .388 vs. Rutgers, 10/2).

After falling in the first set, 18-25, Purdue stormed back to win the match in a dominant fashion, posting a .505 attack % over the final three sets.

Four Boilermakers hit over .350, including three above .430 in the match. Leading the way was Raven Colvin’s 15 kills and two errors on 22 swings for a .455 attack %. In addition to leading the team in efficiency, the sophomore posted eight total blocks (1-7) to lead the team, a mark coming on the heels of setting a season-high nine at Northwestern just two days ago.

Eva Hudson’s 15 kills (15-2-30) led to a .433 attack %. The freshman complimented the night with five digs and a trio of blocks (1-2). Meanwhile, Maddy Chinn secured a career-best seven blocks (1-6). Offensively, the senior recorded just one error with eight kills on 16 swings (.438 attack%). Emma Ellis rounded out the offensive attack with a .357 clip (7-2-14).

Setter Megan Renner produced a Big Ten career-high 41 assists in the match, backed by a career-high two service aces, five blocks (one shy of her career-best) and four digs.

Leading the back row was libero Maddie Schermerhorn, who closed the day with 18 digs.

Purdue will remain on the road for the next two matches. First, the Boilermakers will take on Michigan State on Friday, November 4 at 6 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network before making the short trip over to Ann Arbor, where they will face #RV Michigan at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. The afternoon match will be streamed on B1G+.

The Boilermakers will first take on the Spartans on Friday night at 6 p.m. ET. The match, which will air on Big Ten Network, will be played in the Breslin Center – marking the first time Purdue has played in the arena.

Then, Purdue will travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. Michigan, currently receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll, has consistently been recognized over the last few weeks, and are set to take on the Boilermakers in front of a sold-out crowd in Cliff Keen Arena. The match is set to be streamed on B1G+.

Purdue Week 10 Highlights

  • The Boilermakers posted back-to-back 16+ block matches at Northwestern then vs. Indiana, the first time for the program in more than eight years.
  • Four hitters recorded an attack % over .356 vs. IU. Moreover, three of those players hit over .430% – the first time as many Boilermakers have done so since the early 2020 season (vs. Iowa, 1/30/21).
  • The Boilermakers snapped a four-match losing streak on Sunday vs. Indiana (3-1) with a dominant final three sets, playing their best volleyball of the year. Purdue averaged a .509 attack over the final three sets, and out-blocked the Hoosiers, 17-4.

Schedule Notes

  • Purdue faced three top-9 teams in the span of five matches during October and will face another gauntlet in November, with four top-15 opponents in the last six matches of the regular season.
  • The Boilermakers have four remaining home matches and five road matches.
  • The month of November will be the team’s toughest stretch of the year, with six of the team’s eight matches (75%) against opponents receiving a nod in the AVCA poll. Of those six, four are top-15 programs. They are split with two at home and two on the road.
  • Holloway Gymnasium is sold out for the remainder of the season. In fact, Purdue sold out every match this season except for its 10 a.m. win vs. Bradley on Sept. 2 – a match that came 315 tickets short of a sell-out.
  • Meanwhile, the student section, the Block Party, sold out their season tickets in under two hours of going on sale.

Soccer: Budish Named to Big Ten All-Freshman Team

Soccer freshman forward Kayla Budish has been named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, the conference announced on Thursday.

Budish was a unanimous selection as a forward on the All-Freshman Team. She is the first Boilermaker to be bestowed with freshman accolades since 2017 and the third since 2009. Budish is the 10th all-freshman honoree in the program’s 25-year history and the third forward, along with Jessica Okoroafo in 2005 and Vanessa Ibewuike in 2009.

Purdue has earned at least one All-Big Ten accolade in three consecutive seasons, the first time the program has reached that mark since a 10-year stretch from 2001-2010. Between 2010 and 2020, the Boilermakers were honored with All-Big Ten distinctions just once before, in 2017.

Additionally, Purdue fifth-year midfielder Sydney Duarte was recognized as the team’s Sportsmanship Award honoree. The award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. They also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

In 2022, Budish finished second on the team with four goals, 10 points and 13 shots on goal, and she tied for the team lead with 33 shots. Budish added two assists, one of them a game-winner. The forward from Brookfield, Wisconsin, started all 17 games and was fourth on the team in minutes played, second-most among forwards. In Big Ten play, Budish led the team with three goals and six points.

One of several impactful freshmen who saw considerable playing time for the Boilermakers in 2022, Budish is honored by the Big Ten for the first time in her career.

Duarte played in 83 games with 66 starts in her five-year Boilermaker career. She scored seven goals with eight assists for 22 points, and recorded one game-winning goal and two game-winning assists in nearly 5,500 minutes. In 2022 as a fifth-year midfielder, Duarte was second on the team with four assists and two goals and second with eight points. She played in all 17 games with 15 starts and was fifth with 1,122 minutes played.

A Lake Forest, California, native, Duarte is a multiple-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. She earned her nursing degree in May, 2021 and will earn a certificate in strategic communication management in December.

Baseball’s 2023 Slate Features 31 In-State Games

Baseball’s 2023 schedule features five home weekends and more home dates than true road games for the second straight year.

Head coach Greg Goff has unveiled a slate that features 31 total games in the state of Indiana. Along with 23 home dates at Alexander Field, the Boilermakers are scheduled to play in Indianapolis, Bloomington, Evansville and Terre Haute.

Purdue hosts Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers and Nebraska for Big Ten weekend series this spring. Due in part to the coronavirus pandemic, the Huskers have not visited West Lafayette since the opening weekend of the 2016 conference season and Northwestern has not made the trip down since May 2018.

The Boilermakers visit Oxford, Mississippi, the weekend of March 10-12 for a three-game series at the defending national champion – Ole Miss. Purdue has not played the defending national champ since a May 1967 doubleheader at Ohio State. It will also be the program’s first action against a Southeastern Conference opponent since 2014 series at Tennessee and LSU.

Purdue is slated to begin its season at a Triple-A ballpark in Texas for the third year in a row, opening at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, again. This year it’s a four-game series vs. first-time foe Holy Cross at a stadium in suburban Houston that serves as the home of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston Astros affiliate).

For weekends No. 2 and 3, the Boilermakers return to North Carolina for consecutive series back at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs. The opponents this year are the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Akron. Both series are four-game sets. Ting Stadium serves as the home of the Holly Springs Salamanders of the Coastal Plain League – one of the premier summer ball leagues in the southeast.

Purdue swept each of its three neutral-site series in 2022 as part of the program-record 15-0 start.

The Boilermakers are set to return to Victory Field in Indianapolis for the first time since 2012. Purdue and Butler are scheduled to play at the Triple-A ballpark in the Circle City on a Wednesday evening. The two programs were also scheduled to play there in April 2020 before the shutdown.

The home opener at Alexander Field is slated for Wednesday, March 15 and the first home weekend is March 31 to April 2. The Boilermakers have a season-long, eight-game homestand set for April 25 to May 7. They won’t log many bus miles over the final month of the regular season, playing their final 15 games at Alexander (11 games), Chicago (1) and Bloomington (3).

A full list of gameday promotions and special dates at Alexander Field will be released in February or early March.

Women’s Golf: Sugiyama and du Toit Post Top-15 Finishes at Landfall Tradition

Women’s Golf wrapped up the fall season at the Landfall Tradition with a pair of Boilermakers earning Top-15 performances. Momo Sugiyama placed 12th, playing the Country Club of Landfall’s Dye Course 3-under (68-72-73—213) after 54 holes, while Danielle du Toit tied for 13th at 2-under (71-71-72—214).

Sugiyama led the 96-player field in par-5 scoring, playing the lengthy holes 6-under throughout the weekend. Her three-day total of 213 matched her lowest 54-hole score as a Boilermaker, and the Hawaii transfer paced Purdue for the fourth time in as many tournaments.

As a team, Purdue placed 10th in a competitive field of 18 teams. The Boilermakers finished 15-over (282-290-297—879), ahead of five teams ranked in Golfstat’s Top 50 as well as a pair of Big Ten opponents.

Du Toit’s even par 72 led the Boilermakers on the final day of competition. Shaking off a bogey on the opening hole, the South African played her final 11 holes 2-under with the help of three birdies. Getting back to level par, she cracked the Top 15 and produced her third straight round of par-or-better.

Sugiyama carded a final-round 73 (+1), finishing strong like du Toit after a rough start. She finally found a birdie at the par-5 18th, her 12th hole of the day. Heading back to the front side, Sugiyama birdied three of her final four holes to salvage the final round.

Daniela Ballesteros and Ashley Kozlowski both shot 76 (+4) to round out Purdue’s team score. The two Boilermakers made a pair of birdies apiece throughout Sunday’s round.

The Boilermakers closed the book on the fall and the year 2022, flipping the calendar to 2023 and returning to competition in February. Purdue begins the spring slate at the Tulane Classic in New Orleans (Feb. 12-14), the first of six tournaments preparing the Boilermakers for the Big Ten Championship and postseason play.

Men’s Tennis: Doubles Dominate at Virginia Tech Clash

The men’s tennis team closed out the three-day Virginia Tech Halloween Classic on Sunday with a perfect 3-for-3 in doubles matches.

Facing players from Elon on the final day, the Boilermakers picked up three doubles wins and one singles victory.

Daniel Labrador and Michal Wozniak downed Nicholas Campbell and Daniel Martin, 7-5. Newcomer duo Mujtaba Ali-Khan and Hassan Baroudi picked up a 7-5 victory over Luke Queiroz and Esteban Penagos. Tomas Dudek and Julen Morgan teamed up to beat Oskar Antinhuimo and Krstic Veljko in a 6-4 decision.

Morgan was the lone Boilermaker to pick up a singles win on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Penagos.

Purdue will close out the fall campaign next weekend with the Big Ten Fall Championship at Michigan.

Wrestling Completes Final Tune-Up at Wrestle-Offs

The wrestling team got its first on the mat action of the 2022-23 season in their annual intrasquad scrimmage Friday night at Wrestle-Offs in Holloway Gymnasium. The event saw 18 matches between 22 different wrestlers with five ending in bonus point victories and two going into extra periods.

“Overall I saw a lot of good things from a lot of the guys,” said head coach Tony Ersland. “We need to see more consistency, aggression and authority within our matches going forward. Wrestling your teammates can be hard because they know what you want to do, but we need to see guys come and execute more effectively in bigger bursts.”

Returning NCAA qualifiers Matt RamosParker Filius and Kendall Coleman went undefeated on the night and won all four of their matches with bonus points. The trio combined to outscore their opponents 59-32. The sophomore Ramos put up a 14-4 major decision win and the redshirt senior Coleman took a 14-5 major in their only matches of the evening. Filius wrestled twice, taking a pair of 18-7 and 15-7 major decisions on the back of a team-high 12 takedowns.

Junior Trey Kruse picked up the only other bonus point victory with his 13-1 major of Jaden Reynolds, using this first period four-point near-fall to build his lead in the second match of the event. Kruse would add another 3-2 decision win later in the night.

Besides Kruse, juniors Cooper Noehre and Macartney Parkinson and sophomore Hayden Copass also snagged multiple wins. Noehre wrestled two close matches with sophomore Stoney Buell, but emerged victorious in both by scores of 5-2 and 3-2. Copass did not allow a takedown in either of his matches to win 3-2 and 4-1 decisions over fellow sophomore Tristan Ruhlman. The 184-pounder Parkinson needed extra periods to take a 3-1 decision win after winning 4-3 in his first match thanks to three third period points.

Freshmen Brody BaumannNate CamiscioliBrac HooperJacob Macatangay and Sean Pitts took the mat for the first time as Boilermakers. Camiscioli and Hooper both started their nights off with wins, earning 5-3 and 4-2 decisions respectively.

The regular season gets underway for the Boilermakers Sunday in the Clarion Open. Follow @PurdueWrestling on Twitter and Instagram for the latest news, updates and match-by-match coverage of the event.
