Purdue has already landed its apparent priority in the transfer portal, as South Dakota State big man Oscar Cluff has committed to the Boilermakers, GoldandBlack.com has learned, giving Matt Painter’s team the size and around-the-rim physicality it lacked this past season and badly needs next season.

The Aussie big man would join redshirt freshman-to-be Daniel Jacobsen at center. Jacobsen missed nearly the entire season after breaking his leg one minute into Game 2, compelling Painter soon after to err on the side of offensive punch by playing Trey Kaufman-Renn at the 5. Kaufman-Renn thrived offensively, nearly leading the Big Ten in scoring, but the lack of traditional center dimensions left Purdue vulnerable on the glass and as one of the worst shot-blocking teams in America.

Enter Cluff, who averaged 17.6 points and 12.3 points this season for South Dakota State. He began his career at Washington State. He shot 63 percent from the floor was 4-of-6 from three-point range, helping the Jackrabbits to 24 wins and helping Coach Eric Henderson land the Drake job, a coveted mid-major gig.

It is possible that Purdue continues to look for frontcourt help as both of its young big men — Jacobsen and Raleigh Burgess (shin) — were sidetracked by injury this season.
