Purdue coach Ryan Walters will hire offensive Matt Mattox as offensive line coach, GoldandBlack.com has learned.

Mattox will come to West Lafayette from Texas-San Antonio, where he was co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2022. He also was the Roadrunners’ run game coordinator in 2020-21.

Mattox has been at UTSA since 2020, working for head coach Jeff Traylor. UTSA has won back-to-back C-USA titles in 2021-22 and gone to bowls each of the last three seasons.

Prior to UTSA, Mattox worked at McNeese State in 2019. Mattox’s coaching career began at Houston in 2005. He also has had stops at Butler Community College, Coffeyville Community College, Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, Tulsa, Texas and South Florida.

A native of Holton, Kan., Mattox played at Butler Community College (2000-01) and Houston (2002-03) as a tight end and offensive tackle.

Mattox is the ninth known hire for Walters, joining offensive coordinator Graham Harrell (West Virginia offensive coordinator), defensive coordinator Kevin Kane (Illinois associate head coach/OLB coach), outside linebackers coach Joe Dineen (Illinois GA), secondary coach Grant O’Brien (Illinois defensive analyst), receivers coach Cory Patterson (Illinois running backs), tight ends coach Seth Doege (Ole Miss analyst), cornerbacks coach Sam Carter (Ole Miss) and defensive line coach Brick Haley (Minnesota defensive line). Walters also has tabbed Kiero Small (Michigan) as strength coach.
