Source: Purdue OL coach Matt Mattox leaving for personal reasons
Ryan Walters‘ first Purdue staff already is undergoing change before the season has begun. GoldandBlack.com has learned that offensive line coach Matt Mattox is leaving for personal reasons.
A source said it is “definitely a possibility” that Purdue is targeting Missouri assistant head coach/run game coordinator Marcus Johnson to fill Mattox’s spot. 247Sports reported earlier today Purdue was hiring Johnson “to a role on staff.”
The only other Purdue staffer who currently works with the o-line is analyst Justin Sinz.
Mattox was hired in early January 2023, coming to West Lafayette from Texas-San Antonio where he was co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2022. He also was the Roadrunners’ run game coordinator in 2020-21.
Johnson joined Missouri’s staff in January 2020 as offensive line coach. In May 2021, head coach Eliah Drinkwitz promoted Johnson to assistant head coach/run game coordinator. He retained offensive line duties. In 2020, Johnson worked with Walters on the Tiger staff.
