RIPPING UP MARYLAND’S HALFCOURT

Purdue blew this game up in the second half by just going to very simple offense and letting Braden Smith cook.

With Maryland kneecapped by Julian Reese being out of the game, Purdue just ran high ball screens left and right. Purdue is going after Derik Queen, a freshman playing in full drop coverage in his first road game, here.

Purdue really extends Maryland and gets Queen especially flat-footed by setting the screen really high, and letting Trey Kaufman-Renn put the ball on the floor with an advantage.

It was always the middle of the floor.

Reese’s experience might have helped Maryland, but once he got in hot water fouls-wise, Purdue seemed to target him. The direction of this pick-and-roll looks 100-percent targeted at Reese.

But this half was just about Purdue having an elite point guard and letting him go. Smith and Kaufman-Renn have been great together this season.

FIRST HALF

Things were tight in the first half, but Myles Colvin‘s and Camden Heide‘s activity levels were central to Purdue doing just enough, both of them moving through Maryland’s zone and taking advantage of Maryland just wanting to run on offense.

Zone defense …

Purdue did get really good looks from three in the first half, but didn’t make them. Queen’s size bothered Kaufman-Renn early — TKR figured it out in the second — and Purdue blew both a layup and a dunk. So Purdue did good things on offense early but just didn’t cash in. Thus it needed to make up the difference somewhere.

PURDUE DEFENSE

Good example of how Purdue is helping in the post now, modeled after Nebraska.

That baseline help knocks this out entirely.

Here’s an outstanding defensive series where Purdue is either really communicating or reading one another’s minds, one or the other. This exchange between TKR and Fletcher Loyer makes this play and good on Colvin for grabbing the loose ball.

Strong sequence here from Heide.

Strong sequence here from Colvin on the ball against an AAU offensive possession.

MISC

• The Olajuwon …

• Nice hustle here from Heide …

Braden Smith always seems to know where Fletcher Loyer is when Purdue changes ends. It’s uncanny.
