BREAKING: 2023 DL Daemian Wimberly commits to SMU
2023 Austin (Tex.) Vandegrift defensive lineman Daemian Wimberly announced his commitment to SMU on Monday, giving the Mustangs yet another commitment.
When it came down to it, the official visit to the Hilltop helped SMU win out Arizona State, Baylor, Minnesota, Texas Tech and numerous other offers for his commitment.
“I loved it. It’s nothing else like it,” Wimberly told On The Pony Express. “They just pleased my needs in every single aspect and form. If I had to put a label on it, it’d be Jack and the Bean Stalk because I’m going to keep on climbing and climbing. It’s just a great feeling.”
The coaching staff has a plan for him on and off the field to succeed as well, if he takes advantage of the opportunity.
“It was really just that I could have a starting spot as soon as I come on campus and stuff like that,” Daemian Wimberly said. “I’m going to have to work, of course. It’s a 40-year decision, not just a 4-year decision. This is really what I want to do for real.”
Calvin Thibodeaux a key for Wimberly
SMU defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux covets Wimberly’s athleticism and he can see himself in Scott Symons’ scheme as well.
“His message was, ‘Big freak.’ That’s my dawg. It’s always family vibes,” he said. “I would fit perfectly. There’s a lot of teams talking, but SMU is a place I could really see myself at.”
SMU’s reeled in quite a few official visitors from its defense-only official visit weekend. The group is bonding and Daemian Wimberly says that’s just the beginning of what to expect.

“The vibe is booming. There’s a whole lot they got in the bag right now. Just know there’s a whole lot that’s going to go on. (I’m going to bring) dominance. I’m going to bring some boys with me, too. We got all the SMU commits in a group chat together.”
Wimberly ranks on the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, as a three-star prospect. He’s the No. 70 defensive lineman nationally and No. 104 prospect in Texas.
Daemian Wimberly is commitment No. 12 in 2023
The Mustangs have 11 other commitments in the class of 2023. Lucas (Tex.) Lovejoy wide receiver Jaxson Lavender started things off before Frisco (Tex.) linebacker Brandon Miyazono and Dallas (Tex.)
