2025 4-star QB Keelon Russell commits to SMU
2025 Duncanville (Tex.) quarterback Keelon Russell committed to SMU, he announced on Twitter. The Top 100 prospect keeps SMU’s red-hot recruiting momentum going.
“Having that relationship with coach Lashlee is amazing because he’s gonna take me to the next level,” Russell told On3’s Sam Spiegelman of his decision.
On3 ranks Russell as the 81st overall prospect in the 2025 class as well as the No. 7 quarterback and 17th-ranked recruit in the state of Texas. He held offers from Baylor, Ole Miss, Purdue, TCU, Texas A&M and others.
SMU’s whole staff approach worked to garner plenty of interest from the four-star recruit, paying off with his commitment. The Mustangs turned up the heat since offering in May.
“The relationship. Man, I just love being on the phone with them,” Russell told On3 last month. “They give me the attention to be QB1 at SMU. That means (a lot) to me because I’m still a 2025 quarterback. I got a whole other year to go. For them to build the relationship so early shows how much care and effort they’re trying to bring to me.”
Former Dallas area state champion and quarterback, Kevin Henry-Jennings, watched Russell and Duncanville play inside Ford Stadium last month. Now at SMU, the former South Oak Cliff star has another Dallas area star wanting to follow him.

“Just like Kevin (Henry-Jennings),” he said. “They were having a relationship with him and building it from the start. He came here, able to play, make great plays and everything.”
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Russell’s the No. 233 overall prospect and No. 16 quarterback nationally.
Russell joins a trio of four-star prospects in the 2025 recruiting class for the Mustangs. Athlete Demetrius Brisbon, wide receiver Daylon Singleton and running back Rickey Stewart are already committed. SMU’s class ranks well inside the Top 10 on the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
For the newest SMU commit, his attention now turns to winning a second straight state championship and recruiting for the Mustangs. The Mustangs are red-hot on the recruiting trail and Russell’s just the latest example of that.
