4-star SMU QB commit Ty Hawkins returns to Hilltop for TCU game
SMU four-star quarterback commit Ty Hawkins is back on the Hilltop on Saturday for the Battle for the Iron Skillet. Hawkins was once a TCU commitment, but flipped this summer to the Mustangs.
He is the No. 179 overall prospect and No. 14 QB in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Hawkins has always had ties to the Dallas side of the rivalry with his sister having ran track for the Mustangs. He likes what Rhett Lashlee is building and is ready to see it take off.
“I feel like just everything SMU has been building, they’re bringing players in, they’re bringing everybody they need in to compete with everybody in the ACC,” he said. “I feel like the people and since SMU is in Dallas and we get a lot of kids from Dallas, those are some of the best athletes in the country I would say. Just going out and competing against teams in the ACC, I feel like SMU just does have a good chance in competing with those teams.”
Hawkins was pledged to TCU for over a year, but flipped his commitment to SMU on July 3. The reason? He could see the Mustangs on the rise with the move to the ACC.

“I feel like SMU is building something great with all the recruits we’ve been getting, and the coaching staff,” Hawkins told On3 about his flip. “I feel like they’re just building up and then also we switched to the ACC. It’s a real big deal. I feel like we could take over the ACC and put SMU on the map, and make Dallas the spot to start having everybody start coming to.”
The 6-foot dual-threat QB transferred to IMG for his senior season after beginning his high school career at home in San Antonio for Claudia Taylor Johnson High. He threw for over 4,200 yards, completing 262 passes and hurling 54 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions as a sophomore and junior, while also rushing for 24 scores.
“At IMG Academy, I want to go play great completion, compete and learn as much as I can before enrolling in college early,” Hawkins told On3’s Chad Simmons in July. “IMG has great offensive linemen, they have great receivers to throw to, and I am excited about getting down there and playing with those guys.”
