4-star WR Jalen Cooper commits to SMU
2025 Cibolo (Tex.) Steele four-star wide receiver Jalen Cooper committed to SMU, he announced on Friday. In July, the Mustangs have surged with six commits, three of which are four-stars.
Cooper picked the Mustangs over Kansas State, Kansas, Baylor, Houston and others, but it was in-state Baylor that gave SMU the toughest battle for him. He’s the third wide receiver commit in the class for the Mustangs.
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Cooper is the No. 270 overall prospect and No. 39 wide receiver in the nation. On3 ranks him as the No. 142 overall prospect and No. 19 wideout nationally.
His official visit to the Hilltop back in May stood out in a big way to him. SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff impressed him overall.
“Talking to all the coaches and seeing how they interact with just not their own position guys, but really meeting with coach Rhett in his hotel room and talking about how they’re ready for the ACC,” he said. “Just what they’re attacking on in the offseason is really good.”

Wide receivers coach Rob Likens has plenty of playing time to offer for Cooper, who is a Top 150 prospect for On3.
“Great guy, great relationship. He teaches me the little things,” Cooper said. “We had a film session on my routes and what I can do better. He taught me the inside-outs with how he’s with his wide receivers. So for him to spill the knowledge on me with that, it was nice.”
With Cooper on board, SMU now has 18 commitments in the 2025 recruiting class. He joins four-star IMG Academy (Fla.) quarterback Ty Hawkins, four-star Houston (Tex.) Lamar offensive tackle Dramodd Odoms, four-star DeSoto (Tex.) wide receiver Daylon Singleton, three-star Arlington (Tex.) wide receiver Isaiah Robertson, three-star Houston (Tex.) Heights offensive lineman Devinn Farris, three-star Duncanville (Tex.) defensive back Javion Holiday, three-star Duncanville (Tex.) safety Tyren Polley, three-star DeSoto (Tex.) safety Sael Reyes, McKinney (Tex.) defensive back Zay Gentry and three-star Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy defensive back Elijah Pratt as Texas natives committed.
Outside of the state, SMU holds commitments from Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne linebacker Mark Iheanachor, four-star Los Angeles (Calif.) King Drew Medical Magnet EDGE Chinedu Onyeagoro, Snellville (Ga.) South Gwinnett EDGE Jalen Shivers, Daphne (Ala.) Bayside Academy tight end Miles Uter, Santa Margarita Catholic (Calif.) offensive lineman Jacob Maiava and Corona (Calif.) Centennial offensive lineman Drew Hill.
