Abdul Muhammad leads South Oak Cliff defense to state championship

2023 Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff safety Abdul Muhammad captured a second straight state championship on Friday with the Golden Bears beating Port Neches Grove, 34-24. The SMU commit helped a SOC defense bear down in the 2nd half to aid in the comeback effort.
“Every game in the playoffs started like that. It wasn’t panic for us,” Muhammad told On3. “We knew what we had to do and we came out and did it. We’re a brotherhood and that’s what we do. We came together, we don’t yell at each other. We just tell each other what we have to fix. We’re a mature group, that’s what we do.”
To win a second straight championship for Dallas is something Muhammad said will go down in Texas High School Football lore.
“It’s great. Great feeling, it ain’t kicked in yet, but I know it’s going to hit. We did something immortal, not legendary. It’s crazy.”

SMU hosted Abdul Muhammad for his official visit earlier this month and he enjoyed his time. Up next is signing during the early signing period with the Mustangs.
“It was great,” Muhammad said. “I loved it up there. They showed us the different places around the school, the city. The campus was nice to see the academic side of it. The bonding with the players and the coaches was great also.”
According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Abdul Muhammad ranks as the No. 148 overall safety in the nation and No. 256 overall prospect in Texas.
