The Mustangs finished 11-3 overall and champions of the American Athletic Conference. It wasn’t the ending SMU wanted for many of the team’s seniors who’ve been around a while.

“It’s unfortunate. It’s not how we wanted to end for guys like (Elijah Chatman) and these guys that are done,” SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said. “We wanted to put more of an exclamation point on our season. It’s not the taste we want in our mouth, but it doesn’t change what we accomplished this year. And it doesn’t change where we’re headed in the future. Our guys know what we’ve got to do to get better. We can’t have moments like this where we aren’t at our best, we’re going to get beat.”

Now the Mustangs head to the ACC in 2024, looking to make an impact in Year 1. Lashlee knows there’s work to be done for SMU.

“The new team kind of begins to be born and then we’ll start spring ball,” Lashlee said. “It’s just it’s just the process we go through. You get to the end of the year like this, I’m sure Boston College is same way, you’re tired, worn down. So hopefully guys can recharge a little bit. And for the guys returning, we’ll turn our attention to the 2024 season.

“Now, our calendar is messed up. There is no common sense to what we do in our game right now when it comes to when the season ends and transfers and coaching changes and NIL and signing day and school starting. That’s for another time and they’re not going to ask me what I think.”
