SMU defensive back AJ Davis went down with a neck injury at the end of the 1st half as the Mustangs were beating up Pitt, 28-3. Head coach Rhett Lashlee was able to share an update on his injury at the end of the 1st half with his team up, 31-3.

“We don’t know for sure. He was moving everything, he was alert so that’s positive,” Lashlee said on the ACC Network. “Obviously, he had some pain in his neck so they were just being extra cautious. That’s the most I know so we’re very optimistic, but obviously, pretty scary.”

Davis went in on a kickoff coverage play, attempting to make a tackle. SMU brought out the ambulance pretty quickly and he was taken to a local hospital. His family was brought down to the field and Lashlee brought his team together after the play to calm them down after what was a scary scene.

Davis has four tackles and a pass breakup in eight games this season for the Mustangs.

AJ Davis is a redshirt sophomore, who prepped at Dallas (Tex.) Skyline and signed with the Mustangs in the Class of 2022. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Davis was the No. 103 overall cornerback in the country.
