BREAKING: Alabama transfer Camar Wheaton commits to SMU
Former Alabama running back Camar Wheaton committed to SMU on Tuesday, he announced on Twitter. The former four-star prospect from Garland, Texas took an official visit to the Hilltop last month and the Mustangs won out for Wheaton.
The former Lakeview Centennial (Tex.) standout saw any chance at early playing time for the Crimson Tide come to an end when he suffered a meniscus injury before the 2021 season. He did not play for Alabama in his lone season in Tuscalooa.
Coming out of high school, the 5-11, 190-pound running back was rated as the No. 41 player nationally, No. 4 running back and No. 8 player in Texas, according to the On3 Consensus rankings. Camar Wheaton ran for 3,731 yards and 48 touchdowns in his highs school career.
On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings have Wheaton listed as its No. 10 running back and No. 65 player overall.

For Rhett Lashlee and his staff, Wheaton is another example of bringing Dallas area talent back home as transfers. SMU finished as a finalist for Wheaton in his recruitment, but won out when he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier this year.
Wheaton joins a running back room that lost Ulysses Bentley IV to Ole Miss this spring via the transfer portal. On the flip side, it’s a group that has veterans like Tyler Lavine and Tre Siggers along with younger backs Montaye Dawson and Brandon Epton Jr.

Camar Wheaton is one of a few expected additions to come to SMU this summer. The staff added Georgia offensive line transfer Owen Condon and Virginia offensive line transfer Joe Bissinger, who will also arrive this summer. Overall, SMU still has spots to give.
“It’s kind of a moving target. To be honest with you, we have spots,” Lashlee said after the spring game. “A lot of it depends on your current roster and how things move around on how many you can eventually add. At least 12 players for sure, because they signed, the freshmen. You’re probably looking upwards of 15-20 people that aren’t here on the team that will be here in either June or August.”
