SMU head coach Andy Enfield spoke with the media after the 82-67 loss to UNC on Tuesday night in Chapel Hill. Here’s what he had to say to reporters after.

On SMU’s performance vs. North Carolina: “It was a challenging game. We missed so many layups, seven straight layups in the first half. It was very disheartening. We missed some wide open 3s, enabled North Carolina to get the lead on us. Our defense was fine, our zone and our man defense. When we took some tough shots, and they’re an outstanding transition team, when you miss seven straight layups, they were able to get out in transition, get the lead on us. Then it was an uphill battle from there.

“Our guys played hard. When you go 4-for-18 from the 3-point line, and you shoot 33 percent from the field for the game, it’s challenging. They made three desperation 3s at the end of the shot clock, they banked one of them in, and two of them, they were tough shots. So, give them credit, they made some tough shots tonight. They’re a very good offensive team.”

On how to address poor shooting for SMU: “Well, it’s something the coach can’t do. The players are playing the game. We missed dunks, we missed layups. We missed wide-open layups, we missed contested layups, we missed follow-ups. Then we missed wide-open 3s, and so our guys are better than that. They’re better scorers, they’re better finishers, and they’re better shooters. We shot well from the foul line, it’s the only thing we do well tonight from an offensive standpoint with 17-of-21.

“We hope that Saturday we come out and play great, hold home court. We have to get back, it’s tough to win on the road, especially at North Carolina with the amount of talent that they have and especially when you don’t shoot the ball that well like we did tonight. We have to regroup and get ready for Saturday.”

On if there could be starting lineup changes for SMU vs. Georgia Tech: “Well, we played everybody tonight. We played everybody the other night. We’ve kept the same starting lineup the whole season, but guys that come off the bench play starters minutes. Like Chuck Harris didn’t start tonight, but he played 32 minutes. So it’s really a game-by-game basis who’s playing well, who has the flow going, who’s producing and efficient. So, who knows who will start on Saturday, but look, we played 11 guys tonight, or 10, I think, 10 guys. Everybody on our team’s had chances this year and we’ll continue to do so.”

On renewed energy to start 2nd half for SMU: “Yeah, we cut it down and it was so so disheartening because every time we had a chance to get under 10, we would miss a layup or miss a wide open 3. Then they get out in transition and make a tough shot. We could never get it down close enough where we felt like we had a chance to win it. We were just fighting uphill the entire end of the first half, into the second half. We did come out with great energy and cut the lead down. Then they went on a 5-0 run quickly and got it back up. So we learned a lot from today, a tough place to play. But we have to figure this offensive stuff out, and a lot of it is just shot making right now.”
