Taurean Carter, a defensive lineman that just finished his fifth year at Arkansas, committed to SMU out of the transfer portal. Carter, who has two years of eligibility remaining, made his announcement on Twitter on Friday.
Carter made 32 appearances for the Razorbacks while with the program. After redshirting as a freshman, he played in 21 games over the next two years before missing all of 2022 with a knee injury. He then returned this past season to play in 11 more games while in Fayetteville.
During his career with the ‘Hogs, Carter finished with 60 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Most of that came as a redshirt senior this fall as he posted career-highs in both tackles (25) and sacks (1.5).
Carter played high school football at Mansfield Legacy (TX) where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 568 overall recruit in the 2019 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He finished as a Top-75 DL in his class as well as a Top-75 player out of Texas.

Carter joins Texas A&M defensive back Deuce Harmon, Oklahoma offensive lineman Savion Byrd, Ohio State defensive lineman Omari Abor, Oklahoma offensive lineman Nate Anderson, West Virginia defensive tackle Mike Lockhart, Miami EDGE Jahfari Harvey, Georgia defensive lineman Jonathan Jefferson and Oregon wide receiver Ashton Cozart as commitments for SMU from the NCAA Transfer Portal. The window for transfers opened on Dec. 4 and the Mustangs are hard at work hoping to assemble a quality roster for their first season of ACC play in 2024.
