Austin Upshaw breaks down his spring camp performance
SMU football senior wideout, Austin Upshaw, spoke with the media following the Mustangs’ spring game. Here is some of what the La Porte, TX native had to say.
On how he felt the spring game went: “I thought it was really good. It’s just great to get out here and show everyone what we have been working on all spring. It was a whole lot of fun.”
On having James Proche and Xavier Jones calling plays: “James asked me what I wanted, and I told him and we just made it happen, he’s a good OC for that.”
On what his personal goals were for the spring: “For me personally, it was just about making sure that I was getting better every day. I was trying to make sure that I was working on one thing at a time, taking each practice as it comes, and making sure that I was getting better every day.”
On adjusting to the new coaching staff: “Man, we love the new coaching staff. They bring a ton of energy, the practice’s are great, they’re up-tempo and no one is ever standing around. We are just ready to attack and ready to go.”

On new WR coach Rob Likens: “Man, that guy is just awesome. He is a great teacher and always comes in with a really high level of energy. He truly cares about all of his players, and I’m just really happy that he is here now.”
On his outlook of the WR room heading into the 2022 season: “We definitely lost some big producers last year, but we are super excited to see those guys go do their thing in the league. But we have got a lot of talent coming in, and we have everything that we need in the room. We are all going to be ready, y’all come watch.”
On his thoughts of how spring camp went: “Learning a new offense is always tough, but I think we did a good job laying the framework down. We are going to be grinding all summer, and continue to build off of everything that we have already done.”
On how coach Lashlee is different now that he is the head coach: “I think he is able to do more now. He’s more active talking to both the offense, and the defense. As an OC, he was really just with the offense, and was definitely a bit more quiet and reserved. Coach Lashlee has been great, he brings a ton of energy every single day.”
