SMU running back Brashard Smith missed the first half of running back duty in the Stanford game due to violations of team rules, sources told On The Pony Express. Smith did return three kicks for 45 yards.

His first carry came with 12:12 to go in the third quarter, going for five yards.

In the 1st half without Smith, SMU piled up 364 total yards of offense, but just 86 came on the ground. SMU still averaged 5.4 yards per carry, but Smith is expected to give the offense, led by quarterback Kevin Jennings, a jolt.

Smith has been a breakout star for the Mustangs this year, racking up 561 yards rushing with seven touchdowns along with 138 yards receiving. He garnered some attention as a dark horse Heisman Trophy pick for his early season performance.

SMU brought Brashard Smith in from Miami as a transfer over the offseason, moving him from wide receiver to running back. He’s also been a top return man in the country over the last couple of seasons.

Despite the move to running back, Smith’s taken off with his production and is a key cog in SMU’s 5-1 start.

“Some guys, God gave the ability that when you hand them a football, they know how to run with it,” SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said after SMU’s win over Florida State. “That guy knows how to run with it. So, hand it to him.”

SMU started the 2nd half with a 31-7 lead over Stanford, closing in on bowl eligibility. Brashard Smith being back in action for the Mustangs gives them a key weapon back.

The Mustangs are back in action against Duke next week with another road test at 7 p.m. CT Saturday on ACC Network.
