Duke coach Jon Scheyer misses SMU game due to illness
Duke head basketball coach Jon Scheyer did not travel with the team to Dallas due to illness and will miss Saturday’s game vs. SMU, the program said in a release. Associate Head Coach Chris Carrawell will serve as acting head coach.
Scheyer is expected to return for Tuesday’s game vs. Pitt. The Mustangs meanwhile will face Duke’s rival on Tuesday in a matchup at North Carolina.
Duke is coming off a win over Virginia Tech, 88-65, at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Star freshman Cooper Flagg had 24 points in the game, which featured the Blue Devils looking sharp despite the holiday layoff.
“You’re always concerned about rust and for [Virginia Tech] too probably. Both teams have been off for 10 days. I thought we did some really good things,” Scheyer said after the game. “I thought it was a great step forward. When you know you’re going to play Virginia Tech, they’re going to make you really guard. You’re going to face great physicality on defense, and I thought we just did a great job of consistently trying to wear them down, even though they’re deep. I thought we had some good sequences of going defense to offense that helped us. We have a lot to improve on, but it’s great to take this first step forward, coming back from break.”

Saturday will be a clash of Duke’s top scoring defense in the ACC (59.0 points allowed per game) against SMU’s highest scoring offense in the conference (87.2 points per game). Without Jon Scheyer on the bench, the Mustangs will face a team that’s been dealing with some illness around the program.
The Mustangs are 7-1 at home this season, entering the contest at 11-2 overall and on a seven-game winning streak after a 98-82 win over Longwood on Dec. 29.
