Everything Andy Enfield said after SMU beat FAMU
SMU head basketball coach Andy Enfield spoke with the media after the Mustangs beat Florida A&M, 102-73, on Thursday. Here are notable quotes Enfield said postgame after improving to 2-0 then the rest is in the press conference video.
On comparing SMU’s performance vs. FAMU vs. Tarleton State: “Pretty similar. We tried to defend until the last four minutes where we (were) outscored by nine points the last four minutes. I thought the game was over from the scoreboard standpoint, but we like to finish strong. So, that was probably the only disappointing part. We just let up a little bit, but I thought we gave great effort, had ten more steals. Three guys that had four steals each the first game, all had three tonight. So Kario, Boopie, and BJ continue to do a good job of getting deflections and stealing the ball.”
On SMU PG Boopie Miller: “Well, Boopie is smaller in stature. When you’re on the basketball court and you’re his size, you have to play fast and you have to make it uncomfortable for the other team to bring the ball up the court and in the half court. Keep your body in front and try to break up what they’re trying to do on offense. He did a good job tonight. I thought he had a few foul calls. We put them on a foul line a little too much, but he really played hard defensively.”
On if it’s difficult to evaluate the team because of the talent disparity between opponents: “No, we want them to play hard, play the right way, be in the right spots defensively and then offensively, share the ball and be in the right spots offensively. So, it’s not hard to evaluate, but still go out and perform. We still have a few guys out, so we’ll have a full roster hopefully very soon.”

On Yohan Traore getting to the line: “Ten-for-12 tonight. He’s has very good shooting touch. We feel confident when he gets a foul line, let him shoot open 3s because he’s worked at it. He’s pretty good at it. He’s come a long way, it’s a good game for him.”
On the early identity of SMU: “Well, I think through our preseason, we understand that if we don’t play hard defensively, we’re not very good. We have to be active, we have to be disruptive. Was asked about Boopie, our guards have to be disruptive. Our big guys have to protect the rim. We have to be very sharp in our rotations if we really help. And then have some toughness to us. And when we do that, I think we can be an outstanding team, but if we don’t, we’re not very good.”
On what he sees from SMU’s decision making: “Well, we’re really impressed with their ball movement and they’re unselfish. We had a few possessions tonight, I think one in the second half that I can remember, there was just maybe eight or nine passes and drive and kick. You didn’t have an open shot, your teammate might, and then we threw the ball and had about eight or nine passes, and finally I think we were able to get a foul. So possessions like that mean a lot. It becomes contagious. I think we’re very impressed with our guys, they’re buying into the team concept. It’s becoming contagious where if you come down with no passes and someone just shoots a bad shot, then the next guy says, ‘well, I’m gonna do the same thing.’ That’s contagious as well in a bad way. So very excited about our ball movement, our spacing and some of the guys are really making the extra pass.”
