Matt Cross and Boopie Miller spoke to the media after SMU’s tough 89-62 loss to Duke. They were disappointed by their performance and will look to improve moving forward.

On what Duke did to slow SMU down: [Boopie]: “I just feel like as a point guard, I gotta get better and just get my teammates open, better spots that they usually hit shots in. So I just feel like I gotta do a better job at that. And you know, you just gotta come out and play hard on the defense end.”

[Matt]: :”Yeah, I mean, I think it was just the overall team effort. A lot of things that we didn’t do, we let their length affect us, got stagnant on offense, a lot of standing. And that’s just everybody, I mean, that was not individual. I mean, [Boopie] had like seven assists or something like that. He led the team in assists, so I mean, overall as a team, we just have to move the ball, get some actions, and not let their length just affect us.”

On how Duke’s length affected SMU’s ability to make shots: [Boopie]: “You know I feel like it’s just a process of our teammates just learning. I feel like me and Matt were in the ACC so we know how to play against those types of guys. So it’s just it’s just a learning experience. So just bringing that to the next game and just looking at film and getting better at that.

[Matt]: Yeah I mean like you said it’s different when you’re out there but I mean at the end of the day I feel like we’re a pretty big team too. You know they got big guards but overall I feel like we’re a pretty big team so I feel used to even off the bench. You know we got Kario who’s 6 ‘4 guard. Tibet who’s a 6 ‘9 wing. So I think we’re used to going against it. I think it’s just you know just one of those days it was an all-around team effort and we came out kind of early and I think we got too excited and I feel like we got away from what we were supposed to do, what the game plan was.”

On struggling to get out in transition: [Boopie]: “I feel like it was working a little bit, but guys who usually hit shots like me, Matt, Kario, the whole team, I feel like we just had an off night on shooting tonight. We usually make a lot of threes and transition layups, but I feel like we missed those today. now we just got to move on to the next game.

On why Matt Cross couldn’t keep up his hot start to the game: [Matt]: “I think that’s just bad on my part. I gotta realize that’s what was working. See that was probably the easiest for me in the mismatch in that situation. Every game is different and stay to it. But I mean, at the end of the day, they’re a good team, they’re long. And it’s just one of the most important things as an older guy I got to pick up on and stay to it. Don’t start just jacking threes for no reason.”
