Brown grad transfer Nana Owusu-Anane, a highly coveted forward in the portal, has committed to SMU, he told On3’s Joe Tipton on Wednesday. He officially visited SMU on February 23-24.

Anane, a 6-foot-8 senior from Ontario, Canada, included SMU in his top eight schools last month, along with Arizona StateBaylorGrand CanyonKansasKansas StateLouisvilleSan Diego State. Kansas hosted him for a visit last month as did Grand Canyon.

Owusu-Anane averaged 14.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game during the 2023-24 season. He sat out for the 24-25 season due to a partially torn labrum. He’ll enroll at this summer and play for the Mustangs at at the start of next season.

The All-Ivy League forward garnered early interest from schools like Texas, Georgetown, Syracuse, Mississippi State, Clemson, Ole Miss, Iowa, USC, Butler, Penn State, Oklahoma State, Georgia, Oklahoma, and others once entering the transfer portal in December.

The news of Owusu-Anane comes as the Mustangs are set to tip off Wednesday night in their first ever ACC Tournament game. Andy Enfield’s led the program to a 20-win season in his first season. In Charlotte, SMU takes on Syracuse at 8:30 p.m. CT.

SMU honored Keon Ambrose-Hylton, Matt Cross, Tibet Görener, Chuck Harris and Kario Oquendo in a pregame ceremony on Senior Night. The Mustangs do have a trio of high schools signees and one commitment.

With the scholarship limit moving to 15 this offseason, that allows the staff to continue to stack up talent on the roster. Owusu-Anane is the first example of that as the offseason approaches.
