Welcome to the continuing series of On The Pony Express “Hilltop Visits”. Periodically, yours truly will be joined by major players within the SMU community to discuss where things are and where they hope to trend as this University joined the ACC on July 1.
We were very fortunate and honored to secure this visit in early June. President Dr. R. Gerald Turner has been the steward for this institution since 1995. He’s seen every up and down SMU has experienced. From the breakup of the Southwest Conference in his first year to ultimately playing a pivotal role in SMU joining the ACC.
In an interview set in the Rotunda of Dallas Hall, Dr. Turner shared what July 1 means for the university, the emotions before Sept. 1, 2023 and the university having to prove itself amid the climate of possible change within the ACC and college athletics.
