Welcome to the continuing series of On The Pony Express “Hilltop Visits”. Periodically, yours truly will be joined by major players within the SMU community to discuss where things are and where they hope to trend as this University joined the ACC on July 1.
We were very fortunate and honored to secure this visit in early June. President Dr. R. Gerald Turner has been the steward for this institution since 1995. He’s seen every up and down SMU has experienced. From the breakup of the Southwest Conference in his first year to ultimately playing a role in SMU joining the ACC.
In an interview set in the Rotunda of Dallas Hall, Dr. Turner discussed SMU’s journey toward becoming a P5, now P4, school, what he inherited when he arrived in 1995 and what it took to navigate through those first years.
