The Mustangs conclude the non-conference slate with a road game at Murray State on Friday.
SMU improved to 8-4 with an 89-53 victory over Houston Christian on Tuesday. The Mustangs had 13 steals and 12 blocked shots (T-4th program history) while holding HCU to 34.4% from the field. Samuell Williamson had team highs of 18 points and eight rebounds. B.J. Edwards had five of SMU’s 20 assists. Keon Ambrose-Hylton added 12 points and a career-high three blocked shots.
Chuck Harris was named to Monday’s AAC Weekly Honor Roll after a game-high 24 points in the 68-57 win at Florida State last Saturday. He hit 5-of-10 from three while adding six rebounds and four assists.
MUSTANG LEADERS: The Mustangs are led in scoring by preseason All-AAC selection Zhuric Phelps (15.2, 9th AAC) and Chuck Harris (13.8). Phelps is also averaging 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals (6th AAC). B.J. Edwards has a team-best 3.9 assists per game (9th AAC) and a 2.76 assist-to-turnover ratio (4th AAC – 47 assists / 17 turnovers). Samuell Williamson is leading in rebounding at 6.1 followed by Tyreek Smith at 6.0. SMU is averaging 8.4 steals (4th AAC), 4.8 blocked shots (2nd AAC) and 13.6 offensive rebounds (1st AAC / 28th NCAA).
DEFENSIVE DIFFERENCE: In the second season under Head Coach Rob Lanier, the Mustangs’ defense is among the best in the country. SMU is holding opponents to 36.6% (1st AAC, 4th NCAA) from the field, holding 11 of 12 opponents under 42.0%. The three-point defense is 26.4% (1st AAC, 8th NCAA).
