How to watch: SMU vs. Houston Christian on ACC Network Extra
The SMU Mustangs look for a better showing on Saturday with a 7 p.m. CT matchup in Gerald J. Ford Stadium against the Houston Christian Huskies. Head coach Rhett Lashlee leads the Mustangs into their home opener.
SMU went on the road last week in a Week Zero matchup vs. Nevada, coming away with a hard-fought 29-24 win.
The game between SMU and Houston Christian will broadcast and stream on the ACC Network Extra with radio coverage on 96.7 FM The Ticket. There aren’t any available spreads for this week’s matchup for SMU.

Lashlee wants SMU to get back to work, on track
Lashlee said he’s ready for his team to get right back to work, correcting mistakes. The Mustangs did make some changes on the depth chart for this week. He wants the team to take the next step.

“Well, we need to win. That’s all we’re worried about,” Lashlee said. “Last week, probably, teaches everybody that. And we need to play four good quarters of football. First game of the season, they’re always crazy and weird. They just are. Sometimes it goes the way you want, like it has for us the last two years. Sometimes it goes like it did Saturday night, but we won. Now we have to start to see that consistency of performance.”
SMU is still feeling some things out when it comes to the team playing players in certain spots. Saturday will once again be an opportunity to gather more information.
“We did play some guys in some different spots. In some places we feel like that’s best,” Lashlee said. “In some places, we’re going to move some guys around. I do think we feel like, on both sides of the ball, now that we’ve had summer, fall camp and an actual game in an adverse situation, we know one, how our team will respond.”
SMU-Houston Christian Game Notes
- SMU is 24-4 at home since the start of the 2019 season, which included a 6-0 mark in 2023, a 5-1 record in 2021 and a 6-0 record in 2019.
- This is the second meeting in the series with SMU leading 1-0. The Mustangs won the only meeting, 62-27 at home on Sept. 29, 2018.
- SMU has won its last five home openers going back to 2019. The Mustangs currently have an eight-game home winning streak dating back to 2022, highlighted by an unbeaten mark (6-0) in 2023 at Ford Stadium.
- It’s the first game as HCU head coach for Jason Bachtel, who is in his first season as the Huskies’ head coach and his second year with the program after serving as offensive coordinator in 2023.
- Senior kicker Dillon Fedor earned first team preseason all-Southland Conference honors with offensive lineman Dion Daniels and defensive tackle Zae Smith picking up second team preseason all-conference honors.
- HCU was picked seventh in the SLC preseason poll, voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
