SMU takes the field on Saturday a day after receiving and accepting its invitation to join the ACC on Friday. There’s still a football game to be focused on though as the Mustangs host Louisiana Tech.

Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU and it’s the season-opener for an SMU program with high expectations in 2023.

The Mustangs are currently favored by 20.5 points over the Bulldogs with the total set at 66.5. That’s a wide margin, but if Rhett Lashlee’s team takes care of business, fans in Gerald J. Ford Stadium could see plenty of Mustangs.

“I hope you see a lot of guys. I hope there’s a lot of guys on offense, defense, teams that I know our fans are excited to see that kind of show up and maybe even impress us because there’s a lot of these guys who we still don’t know how they’ll handle a game environment,” Lashlee said this week. “Practice is one thing, game’s different. I’ll tell you one thing, I’m excited to see our defense play. I think they’re flying to the ball. I think they’re playing with a lot of confidence.

“I think probably, hopefully, what I think you see more than anything is that, on both sides of the ball and special teams, we play with enough depth that you see a lot of guys. And then maybe afterwards we can talk about who stood out.”

The Mustangs will have to hold off explosive Louisiana Tech wideout Smoke Harris, who had 11 catches for 155 yards and a touchdown in Week 0. While that’s a tall task, SMU’s looking to see the expected improvement from its defense.

“I’m just really excited for our guys more than anything. They’ve worked really hard to get to this point and just excited,” SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons said. “I think we’ve had two really good days, which you would expect Week 1. They’re excited to play somebody else and be able to go live. I think a lot of time in the offseason from spring from recruiting to spring ball to summer development, yeah, these guys have worked really hard so excited to see what our first impression looks like this year.”
