SMU and TCU will face off at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU with the Mustangs looking to rebound from a loss at Maryland while the Horned Frogs are coming off a bye. It’s the first matchup between the two teams inside Ford Stadium since 2018.

Since then, the Mustangs have won two straight contests against the Horned Frogs. You can listen to the game by tuning in to The Ticket as SMU will looks to send former head coach Sonny Dykes home a loser in his first Battle for the Iron Skillet as TCU head coach.

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee recognizes the unique situation he was thrown in. A coach leaving for a rival, Lashlee luckily had familiarity with a majority of the team. He served as offensive coordinator under Dykes from 2018-19.

“I think it was incredibly unique. It’s nobody’s fault,” Lashlee explained on Wednesday. “It was just a unique situation that doesn’t happen a lot in college football, but I think everybody handled it well. Fortunately for us, most of the people stayed that wanted to stay and they wanted to be here at SMU. We’re excited they’re all here.

“We just tried to be real. Fortunately, I knew probably over half of them. Credit our players. All I asked them to do is just trust us and give us a chance, and they did. I think they’re happy they did and I know we’re happy they did as well.”

SMU trying to manage emotions as Dykes returns as TCU coach

SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods is aware of the rivalry set to tee it up on Saturday. Not only did the coach on the other side coach most of his players, but the long drawn out way Dykes left certainly left a bad taste in many mouths around the Hilltop.

Woods said it’s an extra emphasis to play hard, but not let emotions get in the way.

“Coach Lashlee told us in staff meeting on Sunday that we need to be passionate not emotional, which I don’t know if you can say it better than that,” Woods said on Tuesday. “There’s going to generate some natural energy. I think you can be energetic without being silly. You can be passionate without being emotional.”

TCU is 2-0 to open the 2022 season with wins over Colorado and Tarleton and enter Saturday’s matchup after a bye week in Week 3. TCU finished the 2021 season 5-7. SMU is 2-1, starting the season with wins over North Texas and Lamar before falling to Maryland last weekend, 34-27.
