SMU wide receiver Jake Bailey and safety Jonathan McGill spoke with the media on Saturday after the 36-31 win over Rice. Here’s some of what they had to say.

On SMU’s performance against Rice

Bailey: “Definitely a weird game. Like you said, won a lot from a statistical standpoint, but always had that one play I feel like that, set us back a little bit where at times where we could have really separated and made that you know margin bigger. I think that’s when we had a couple messups, things go wrong, things that we need to fix in order to eventually be able to separate like we want to at those times during the game. So, weird game, definitely. Things on our end that we could fix up to ultimately separate in those moments, like I said, but we’ll get there.”

On defensive effort from the Mustangs

McGill: “Kind of similar from a defensive standpoint. Got the dub, which obviously means the most in our race and in our strides for trying to play for a championship. But sloppy a little bit on a couple things, tackling is probably the first thing that comes to mind. We gave them a lot of yards after contact. Shout out to their backs and Connors did a great job all night making people miss and so that’s kind of just on us, eye discipline, missed tackles. That’s all it really is. Whether your eyes getting too high or something like that. Just a little stuff, sloppy on our end, but left with the dub (for SMU). And that’s kind of all that matters at the end.”

SMU now hosts North Texas on Friday night at 8 p.m. CT in another massive AAC matchup. The Mustangs are 7-2 overall and 5-0 in AAC play after beating the Owls.
