Kansas transfer, former 4-star prospect DJ Warner commits to SMU
After extending an offer earlier this month to Kansas defensive end transfer DJ Warner, he’s announced he’s transferring to SMU. The former four-star prospect has four years to play three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Missouri is the other program to have offered while Nebraska is also in the mix for him. Warner ended the season with just two tackles and five pressures over 202 defensive snaps. He’s among the highest-ranked signees in Kansas history.
Outside linebackers coach Sam Dunnam led the charge for Warner. The Mustangs lose Jahfari Harvey to graduation and have Isaiah Smith and Billy Walton back, but wanted to stack depth and talent at the position.
At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, he was the No. 80 overall prospect and No. 11 EDGE in the country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking in the 2023 class. He was also the No. 2 player in Arizona and a huge “stock up” performer from his All-America Bowl appearance to cap his career just a year ago.
Here’s a look at Warner’s scouting report from high school:
“Dynamic speed rusher who presents a mismatch off the edge. Has unverified size, listed at around 6-foot-4, 215 pounds. Does not appear to have an overly large frame. A senior riser who emerged as a blue-chip recruit late in his high school career. Primarily lines up as a stand-up pass rusher on Friday nights. Cat-quick off the edge. Shows a plus first step, darting into the backfield. Flexible, showing the ability to turn the corner at high speeds.

“Operates with an encouraging level of coordination and technical skill. Naturally slippery. Hits offensive tackles with a quick jab step before shooting inside. Doesn’t give up if initially blocked, making some second-effort plays behind the line of scrimmage. Physical at the point of attack and displays some pop in his hands. Explodes into ball carriers. Flashes range and play speed in pursuit.
“Finished his senior season with 16 sacks, 20 TFL and two interceptions. A plus athlete who was a state finalist in two disparate events in track and field – the shot put and triple jump. Posted a personal best of 44-8.75 feet in the shot put and 41-2 feet in the triple jump. Appears to be lighter and will need to fill out his frame in order to hold up against the run as an every down defender.”
