Key SMU target Derrick McFall decommits from UCLA

2024 Tyler (Tex.) athlete Derrick McFall decommitted from UCLA, he told On3 on Monday. The Mustangs hosted him on an official visit earlier this fall and are hoping to land his pledge.
The four-star prospect committed to the Bruins in August despite not visiting Los Angeles.
“I’ll be decommitting from UCLA because I feel like it’s the best choice for me and my family,” McFall told On3. “I like UCLA, but I feel like it doesn’t fit me outside of football.”
McFall has taken a number of visits to schools around the country and is planning a decision by the early signing period
“UCLA is staying on the list with Kansas State, Missouri, SMU and UTSA,” McFall said. “I have an official visit to Missouri on Dec. 15. I already took my official at SMU and I’m getting K-State and UTSA lined up.”
SMU running backs coach Khenon Hall is keeping up his pursuit of the 5-10, 185-pound prospect. He’s a versatile prospect that could play running back, wide receiver or other skill spots. Playing for California Power, he made waves this offseason on the camp circuit.

McFall is a four-star prospect ranked No. 369 overall in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the cycle’s No. 12 athlete and No. 62 recruit from Texas.
SMU is having success on the field this fall, sitting at 9-2 overall and 7-0 in American Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs head to the Atlantic Coast Conference this summer and McFall would be a key piece to the future.
