SMU landed another transfer commitment in the secondary when Liberty’s Chris Megginson announced he’s headed to the Hilltop.

Megginson picked the Mustangs over offers from Cincinnati, Kansas, Indiana, Wake Forest and others.

In 2022, he notched 33 total tackles, two tackles for loss, six pass breakups and a forced fumble. When SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons was at the helm of the Flames’ defense in 2021, he made 21 total tackles, a tackle for loss and five pass breakups.

In 2020, Megginson emerged as a key defender for Symons, making 30 tackles, grabbing an interception and making a pass breakup in 11 games. As a true freshman in 2019, he played in seven games, notching 14 tackles and breaking up two passes.

Chris Megginson continues SMU red hot transfer run

Megginson joins Texas A&M transfer running back LJ Johnson, Liberty transfer linebacker Ahmad Walker, Fresno State transfer defensive back Cale Sanders, Missouri transfer offensive lineman Hyrin White, Miami transfers Key’Shawn Smith, Jordan MillerElijah RobertsJaylan Knighton, West Virginia transfer defensive back Charles Woods and Stanford defensive back Jonathan McGill as transfer commits for SMU.

Head coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff balanced preparing for the New Mexico Bowl with transfer recruiting. SMU finished the season 7-6 with the loss to BYU in the bowl game.

“It’s been crazy, it’s been exactly that crazy,” offensive coordinator Casey Woods said before the bowl game. “I think the NCAA did a good thing, we had that four-day dead period window that allowed us to touch base with our players, get ourselves prepared for the portal to open. Once it went to contact period on the 5th, it’s been a crazy 12 days. Obviously, losing our official visit weekend this weekend, we kind of had to use that Monday, Tuesday. I’ve never done back-to-back official visits where we had nine and nine, or whatever it is we had. We ended up with, I think, 20 guys through here the last four days.”
