BREAKING: Liberty transfer DB Rocket Rahimi commits to SMU
Liberty transfer defensive back Rocket Rahimi committed to SMU, he announced on Twitter on Tuesday. The 6-1, 190-pound defensive back has one year of eligibility remaining.
Rahimi had offers from Arizona State, Kansas, Kansas State and West Virginia on top of SMU.
In 2022, Rahimi had a terrific final season for the Flames, notching 56 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions and a fumble recovery.
SMU assistant Rickey Hunley recruited Rocket Rahimi all the way back when the Mission Viejo, Calif. native was in high school at Cornerstone Christian. He played two seasons at Saddleback C.C. before joining Liberty in 2021.
In 2021, he finished with 22 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble in 13 games.
With Rahimi on board, SMU’s transfer class gets even stronger, already sitting in the Top 5 of the On3 Transfer Team Recruiting Rankings.

Rocket Rahimi continues SMU red hot transfer run
Rahimi joins Texas A&M transfer running back LJ Johnson, Liberty transfers Chris Megginson and Ahmad Walker, Fresno State transfer defensive back Cale Sanders, Missouri transfer offensive lineman Hyrin White, Miami transfers Key’Shawn Smith, Jordan Miller, Elijah Roberts, Jaylan Knighton, West Virginia transfer defensive back Charles Woods and Stanford defensive back Jonathan McGill as transfer commits for SMU.
Head coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff are enjoying plenty of portal success. Rahimi is the latest to join a retooled defense for Scott Symons.
“Long term, linebacker and possibly edge and possibly a d-tackle still,” Symons told On3. “When I say long term, I’m saying you’ve got your mid-year spots and you’ve got your May guys. Trying to balance who you’re taking at mid-year with limited mid-year spots and how you can set yourself up for the best available in May is kind of the name of the game. I think you’ll see some more DBs come in January.”
