FINAL: SMU defeats Syracuse, 73-53

SMU was able to keep Syracuse at bay, holding its double-digit lead en route to its first conference tournament win since 2022. The Mustangs built built a 19-point lead with two Kario Oquendo free throws with 1:03 to play. Jackson Young hit the 3 in the final minute to put the exclamation point on a 20-point win over the Orange. SMU wins, 73-53.

Under-4: SMU extends lead to 16 points

Yohan Traore stepped into the game and made a basket. Keon Ambrose-Hylton made a pair of free throws then BJ Edwards added back-to-back baskets, giving the Mustangs a 55-41 lead with 5:29 to play. Boopie Miller added a floater and Keon Ambrose-Hylton made a layup to give the Mustangs a 16-point lead with 3:59 to play.

Under-8: Samet Yigitoglu exits with injury

SMU forward Samet Yigitoglu exited the game against Syracuse in the ACC Tournament with an apparent shoulder injury. The 7-footer from Turkey left with two points, two rebounds and three turnovers in the 2nd half. While the offense wasn’t coming for him, he had held Syraucse big man Eddie Lampkin, Jr. to just two points when he left the game with 11:19 to play. He returned to the bench just before the media timeout. His status will be something to watch as SMU leads 49-38.

Under-12: SMU keeps double-digit lead

Syracuse got on the board in the 2nd half with a three-pointer from Jyare Davis, but SMU kept its hot shooting going. Chuck Harris continued his strong play with a 3 as Matt Cross added a basket. SMU’s shooting 46 percent to Syracuse’s 36 percent, at this point.

Under-16: SMU adds to lead

After each team started the half with stops, SMU opened up a mini-run to start the game out. That led to a Syracuse timeout after Samet Yigitoglu threw down a dunk to open the 2nd half scoring then Boopie Miller made a pair of free throws. Chuck Harris then hit a 3 to give the Mustangs a 10-point lead at the timeout.

HALFTIME: SMU leads Syracuse 31-28

A flurry of action capped the first half as the Mustangs extended its lead to 31-22, but Syracuse stormed back to make it a 31-28 game at halftime. Starling became the first player to double-figures, leading all scorers with 11 points. Both teams are shooting above 50% from three-point range. Syracuse has eight turnovers to SMU’s four.

Under-4: SMU takes a 4-point lead

SMU’s balanced scoring attack led to a 6-0 run that stifled Syracuse for a scoring drought of 2:05 going into the timeout. Boopie Miller drew a foul that gave Eddie Lampkin, Jr. his second foul of the game, which sent him to the bench. After Miller hit his two free throws, that put SMU up 25-21. Chuck Harris was called for a foul that led to the timeout.

Under-8: SMU trails 19-18

After giving up a 3-pointer, SMU went into the media timeout down again. Guard Tibet Gorener was able to block an attempt by Syracuse going into the break.

Under-12: SMU storms back to take 12-11 lead

SMU made four of its last five field goals to take a 12-11 lead thanks in part to a layup from BJ Edwards on a drive. JJ Starling leads all scorers with seven points on the night at the timeout.

Under 16: SMU down 7-5

After allowing Syracuse to get hot early, SMU found itself down 7-5 at the first media timeout. The Mustangs got a 3-pointer from BJ Edwards to get on the board.
