Miami Hurricanes offensive lineman Zion Nelson has signed with SMU after he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last month, On3’s Pete Nakos has learned.

The 6-5, 312-pounder started 32 games over his career with the Hurricanes. After an up-and-down season at left tackle for SMU, they land Nelson to shore up the offensive tackle position.

In 2019, Nelson’s freshman season with Miami, he earned the starting role at left tackle for all 13 games. Through the 2021 season, Nelson would continue to be a key member of the Hurricanes’ offensive line, becoming a linchpin at left tackle. By that time, he appeared to be a future NFL offensive lineman, some even pegging him in the 1st round.

Unfortunately for Nelson, injuries derail his trajectory. A knee surgery in 2022, along with several setbacks, has largely kept him off the field in the time since going down. SMU’s hoping he’ll be fully set and ready to go to factor into an offensive line room that could use an upgrade on the edge.

Zion Nelson was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2019 out of Sumter, South Carolina, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 126th-ranked offensive tackle and the 1,380th-ranked player overall in that recruiting cycle.
