Miami transfer Brashard Smith commits to SMU
Miami athlete Brashard Smith entered the NCAA transfer portal after the Hurricanes season ended. Now, he announced he’s committed to SMU, joining a host of former Hurricanes in Dallas. With Smith in Dallas, SMU can play him all over the field in the offense.
Smith played three seasons with the Hurricanes, making 10 starts over 35 games. He set career highs in receptions and yards last year before a slight drop off this fall. Smith was in Dallas for an official visit this past weekend.
In total, Smith has 69 catches for 770 yards, four touchdowns and 11.2 yards per catch.
This season, Smith lined up at running back, wide receiver and in the return game. That type of versatility caused some coaches and players to compare him to star NFL wideout Tyreek Hill. SMU’s hoping he brings that type of electric play.
“Brashard is a Swiss Army knife, can do everything offensively and can also probably paly defense,” Miami wideout Colbie Young said this fall. “Every time Brashard touches the ball you expect him to take it to the house. He’s very electric, reminds me a little bit of Tyreek Hill.”
In 2023, he rushed nine times for 132 yards and a touchdown while catching 22 balls for 263 yards and two scores. Over 39 kick returns, he’s averaged 25 yards a return. His career-high in average yards per kick return came this season when he averaged 29.0 yards, including a kickoff return for a touchdown against Texas A&M. That was good for fourth nationally among returners for average yards per kickoff return.
