BREAKING: Miami transfer RB Jaylan Knighton commits to SMU
Miami running back transfer Jaylan Knighton committed to SMU, he announced on Twitter. Knighton will have three years to play two seasons at his next program.
The former four-star prospect had a terrific start to his career under Rhett Lashlee & Co. He ran for 209 yards and a touchdown on 52 carries before emerging as the starter in 2021. In 2021, he rushed for 561 yards and eight rushing touchdowns on 145 carries.
The 5-10, 190-pound back added 40 catches for 497 yards during his three years with Miami, accumulating four additional scores through the air.
Knighton was a four-star prospect coming out of Deerfield Beach High School in the 2020 class. He was the No. 122 prospect in the nation, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Knighton joins West Virginia transfer defensive back Charles Woods and Stanford defensive back Jonathan McGill as transfer commits for the Mustangs. Head coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff are balancing preparing for the New Mexico Bowl with transfer recruiting.
“We have to be out actively recruiting, but at the same time preparing for a game in less than two weeks,” Lashlee said on Monday. “We’re out recruiting hard this week. We had a good practice over the weekend. We’ll be able to practice some this weekend and try and get in a normal game week routine in terms of leading up to the game a week from Saturday, but also still recruiting non-stop, in and out until we leave Wednesday for the bowl site.”
The Mustangs will face BYU on Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
