BREAKING: Miami WR transfer Key'Shawn Smith commits to SMU
Miami wide receiver transfer Key’Shawn Smith committed to SMU, he announced. That made four former Hurricanes to commit to the Mustangs this month.
He had 13 catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns this season, as well as 14 yards on three carries.
The San Diego, California native redshirted his first year on campus before having a breakout year in 2021. He posted 33 receptions for 405 yards and three touchdowns as the ‘Canes went 5-7. He was third amongst receivers in 2021 but dropped to seventh in 2022.
Smith was a three-star prospect coming out of Lincoln (San Diego) High School in the 2020 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
The 6-foot-1, 188-pound wideout will have three years of eligibility remaining to play two seasons.

Against Bethune-Cookman, Smith took back the opening kickoff 72 yards, setting up a touchdown. He later had a 65-yard return that was a toe-on-the-sideline away from being a touchdown. SMU added a dangerous man in the return game.
“Once you catch the ball you have to run, can’t stop your feet – full speed,” said Smith, who only had a couple of returns last season. “You can win or lose a game by special teams. (Coaches) hold special teams accountable, and we take it very seriously.”
SMU adding plenty of transfer talent
Smith joins Miami transfers Jordan Miller, Elijah Roberts and Jaylan Knighton along with West Virginia transfer defensive back Charles Woods and Stanford defensive back Jonathan McGill as transfer commits for SMU. Head coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff are balancing preparing for the New Mexico Bowl with transfer recruiting.
“We have to be out actively recruiting, but at the same time preparing for a game in less than two weeks,” Lashlee said on Monday. “We’re out recruiting hard this week. We had a good practice over the weekend. We’ll be able to practice some this weekend and try and get in a normal game week routine in terms of leading up to the game a week from Saturday, but also still recruiting non-stop, in and out until we leave Wednesday for the bowl site.”
The Mustangs will face BYU on Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
