BREAKING: Miami WR transfer Romello Brinson commits to SMU
Miami wide receiver transfer and former four-star prospect Romello Brinson committed to SMU, he announced on Instagram. The Miami native has three years to play two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Over two seasons with the Hurricanes, Brinson caught 14 passes for 189 receiving yards and one touchdown. His first touchdown catch came in 2022 when he finished with seven grabs for 90 yards.
Brinson missed spring practice last year, but coaches were expecting a lot from him.
“You know, Romello is a smart guy,” Miami offensive coordinator Josh Gattis said. “He’s a smart football player. He has the ability to play all over the field as far as receiver for us.”
Romello Brinson played in 11 games as a true freshmen when Rhett Lashlee was his offensive coordinator in 2021. He hauled in seven passes totaling 90 receiving yards with one touchdown.
The 6-2, 185-pound wideout played high school football at Northwestern in Florida, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 24 wide receiver recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Romello Brinson the latest transfer to commit to SMU
Brinson joins Texas offensive lineman Logan Parr, Texas A&M transfers PJ Williams and LJ Johnson, Liberty transfers Rocket Rahimi, Chris Megginson and Ahmad Walker, Fresno State transfer defensive back Cale Sanders, Missouri transfer offensive lineman Hyrin White, Miami transfers Key’Shawn Smith, Jordan Miller, Elijah Roberts, Jaylan Knighton, West Virginia transfer defensive back Charles Woods and Stanford defensive back Jonathan McGill as transfer additions for SMU.
SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods is happy with how the coaching and recruiting staff all handled a busy transfer portal cycle. SMU hosted numerous transfer targets over a 10-day window in December and more in January.
“It’s been a unique experience. We were still under a different set of expectations at that point (last year about the portal) so we were able to get a good plan,” Woods told On3. “Coach Lashlee, coach Cooper and our recruiting staff were able to put together a great combination of what we think is what we still need to do in the great state of Texas, which is recruit good high school players. We did a great job organizing the class. Our recruiting class did an incredible job helping us out through the whole year.”
