After losing a commitment from Nana Owusu-Anane, SMU went to work and found its replacement in Sam Walters, who flips from Mississippi State to SMU.

Measuring 6’10 200 pounds, Walters has the size to play the true power forward position for SMU. Walters fills a need in this roster following the departures of Nana Owusu-Anane, Jerrell Colbert, and Yohan Traore in the front court.

Walters played in 23 games this season at Michigan, averaging 5.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game in 12.7 minutes. Known as a sniper with length, Walters hit 36.6% of his shots from distance this season. He missed the final month and a half while dealing with a back injury and last played on Feb. 8 at Indiana. Walters scored a season-high 13 points twice this season in wins over Tarleton State and Western Kentucky in non-conference play.

As a freshman on Alabama’s Final 4 squad, the Florida native averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds a game. Also in that season with the Tide, Walters shot 42.7% from the floor, 39.4% from 3-point territory and 82.5% from the charity stripe.

Walters’ figures are impressive, however his sample size is relatively limited. The question for the former Michigan Wolverine is can he continue to improve his production while he sees an increase in minutes?

For now, the Mustangs have filled an unexpected hole and avoided a potential problem by picking up Walters.
