Oregon true freshman receiver Ashton Cozart announced his commitment to SMU on Wednesday, giving the Mustangs another transfer addition.

The freshman spent only one season with the Ducks and did not record any statistics, according to the team’s official stat-keeping. SMU lost a downfield threat in Jordan Kerley to graduation this offseason and retools the receiver room with a young, developing player.

Cozart spent last weekend at SMU on an official visit after wide receivers coach Rob Likens went in-home with him last week. Kentucky, Utah, Texas A&M and others showed interest in the 6-3, 195-pound pass catcher before he pledged to the Mustangs.

Prior to enrolling at Oregon, Cozart was a highly sought after prospect. He ranked as a four-star recruit and was the No. 215 overall player in the country in 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

He also checked in as the No. 30 receiver in the class and the No. 38 overall player from the state of Texas, hailing from Flower Mound (Tex.) Marcus. He held offers from Oklahoma, Texas, and Miami, among many others, out of high school.

Cozart adds to SMU’s momentum in the transfer portal

Cozart joins Georgia defensive line transfer Jonathan Jefferson as commitments for SMU from the NCAA Transfer Portal. The window for transfers opened on Dec. 4 and the Mustangs are hard at work hoping to assemble a quality roster for their first season of ACC play in 2024.
