SMU is set to take on North Texas on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network. The Mustangs kick off the first season under Rhett Lashlee on the road in Denton, Texas.

Lashlee is excited to get his first season on the Hilltop underway. They’ll face a tough task against former SMU head coach and North Texas defensive coordinator Phil Bennett.

“I begged him to take it easy on us,” Lashlee said at his press conference on Wednesday. “I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”

This is the 42nd meeting between SMU and UNT with the Mustangs holding a 34-6-1 all-time advantage. SMU has won the last three meetings including a 35-12 victory last season. SMU won 65-35 when the two teams last faced each other in Denton in 2020.

The Mustangs are receiving votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll. In 2021, SMU reached No. 19 in the AP Poll and was as high as No. 16 in the Coaches Poll. SMU reached No. 16 in both the AP and Coaches Polls during the 2020 season, and was ranked as high as No. 15/14 in 2019.
