SMU is set for a soldout matchup against rival TCU on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU inside Ford Stadium. To preview the 101st Battle for the Iron Skillet, check out the latest edition of the On The Pony Express Podcast below as we preview the game and make predictions.

SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods said SMU will have to be patient against the Horned Frogs defense on Saturday. The Mustangs are looking to make it three straight wins over their nearby rivals.

“First word we wrote down was patience this week when we got there,” Woods said this week. “The whole defense was designed back in the Big 12 days to stop all the Air Raid stuff. It was designed to cut down on those sort of things. Still gives you frustration in the run game because their angles are kind of goofy. If you’re not careful, you can get into trying to play the defense too much and you don’t run your own offense. There’s ways you’ve got to execute your base plays.”

SMU doing its best to control emotions vs. TCU

SMU star wideout Rashee Rice is one of the players who has typically led with emotion. This year, even as his former head coach is on the other sideline, he’s trying to keep his emotions in check.

“Honestly, I don’t think it’s anything to do with emotions,” Rice said on Tuesday. “We’re happy with our new coaching staff. I’m pretty sure they’re happy over there. We’re just looking to have two teams competing against each other this weekend.”

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee is in his first season as the head coach at SMU and has a 2-1 record. Lashlee, who served as offensive coordinator for the Mustangs for two seasons (2018-19), served as the offensive coordinator at Miami in 2020 and 2021.
