Recap: SMU uses big plays to roll past Prairie View A&M, 69-0
SMU Football cruised past Prairie View A&M, using multiple big plays and a blocked field goal to improve to 2-1. The Mustangs beat the visiting Panthers, 69-0. Here’s the recap of how the Mustangs got the job done.
SMU kicked the ball away and Prairie View A&M took over at its own 25. After a three and out, the Mustangs were aided by a couple of personal foul penalties to move their drive into PVAMU territory. Preston Stone hit Jordan Hudson for a 15-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
PVAMU turned around and drove down the field. Mixing the run and pass, PVAMU converted a 3rd and 6 to move to the SMU 22. SMU’s defense held up the PVAMU drive and the Mustangs blocked a field goal to make it a 14-0 lead. Chris Megginson returned the block kick 53 yards for a touchdown.
PVAMU went three and out as Nelson Paul nabbed his second sack of the season to force a punt. SMU took over at its own 41. Two plays into the drive, Stone’s pass to Roderick Daniels was dropped and it was intercepted by PVAMU. SMU’s defense was able to hold PVAMU.
After the punt, Stone hits Daniels for a 91-yard touchdown to put the Mustangs up 21-0 with 14:40 to go in the 1st half. The SMU defense held and forced a punt on the next drive.
SMU was able to drive down the field with some quality runs by Camar Wheaton and Tyler Lavine. Stone hit Jake Bailey for a 1st down along the sideline. Stone finished the drive off with a 5-yard touchdown run to put the Mustangs up 28-0.
After a three and out by PVAMU, SMU took the ball and picked up a good bit of yards thanks to a pass to Hudson. Stone scrambled and picked up a 15-yard penalty on a late hit. Romello Brinson also caught a 9-yard pass. After Wheaton picked up a 1st down, Brinson caught a screen from Stone and extended for the goalline to put the Mustangs up 35-0.

After SMU forced a punt, the Mustangs took over to work the 2-minute drill. Stone hit Hudson with a curl route before finding Bailey deep down the field to get the Mustangs to the 24. Stone found Kerley as he scrambled away from tacklers to get the Mustangs to the 4 with 9 seconds left. Stone and Kerley connected for the touchdown on the next play to take a 42-0 lead at the half.
After Key’Shawn Smith’s 29-yard return, Kerley caught a short pass and went 59 yards for the touchdown to make it 49-0. The next drive, SMU forced a three and out.
On the next drive, Kevin Jennings found Key’Shawn Smith for a 27-yard touchdown pass, which was Smith’s first touchdown grab as a Mustang. SMU went up 56-0 with 11:02 to go in the 3rd quarter.
After a punt by PVAMU, the backups continued to move the ball for the Mustangs. Joey Bruszer caught a 23-yard touchdown from Jennings to make it 63-0. Wheaton was able to score early in the 4th quarter to make it 69-0, but the point after attempt was blocked. SMU finished off the 69-0 win.
